The Bed & Breakfast at the Bartlett Farm is located in Guilford, Ct, which is one of the oldest towns in New England. In the year 2014, the town will be celebrating it’s 375th birthday, and has special events and activities planned throughout the year, however, Guilford is a very active community throughout the year. Here’s just a few to start.
The Guilford Art Center. Located at 411 Durham Road ( Rt. 77) the Art Center is less than 10 minutes form the B & B. The Guilford Art center features many exhibits of all the mediums throughout the year. They also have a gallery located on site with many of the pieces available for purchase.
The Henry Whitfield House is the oldest home in the State, and New England’s oldest stone house. This was the home of the Reverend Henry Whitfield, who was the leader of the original settlers of the town, in both body and spirit. The Whitfield House served as a residence, church, and stronghold for the original colony. It is now a State museum that shows both the history of Guilford, but also that of the original colonists of New England.
Bluff Head. The Bed and Breakfast at the Bartlett Farm is literally around the corner from one of Connecticut’s best trails for hiking. Bluff head offers multiple trails, and is the highest point in Guilford. From the top , on any given day, you can see much of Guilford, the Long Island Sound, and even Long Island itself. A hike here in the fall with the leaves turning is a must. Bluff Head is only one of many trails that are available to our guests. For more about the many trails that Guilford has to offer, check out the Guilford Land Conservation Trust website.
Probably the best way to see Guilford is to take a tour of it on a segway. Shoreline Segway offers tours by appointment throughout the year. You can also arrange to take tours of Hammonassett State Park or Mystic as well. Segways are easy to ride, and allows you to see all of downtown, and check out the sites with out having to walk. This way you can see the points of interest, and lay out your day of shopping, dining and sight seeing. For more information, here’s the website for Shoreline Segway
Guilford, like many towns in Connecticut has something going on year round. For those staying at the B & B, here are a few of the highlights by month.
June really starts things off. At the end of the month, the Guilford Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce take over the Fairgrounds for the weekend. On Saturday, the Rotary Club has their annual Lobster Fest. and on Sunday, The Chamber has their Taste All of the Shoreline. This definitely a good weekend to be in Guilford.
Guilford is in full swing during the month of July. The weekend after the 4th is the annual fireworks show, which is one of the best on the shoreline. Since it is on the Fairgrounds, many a tailgate party springs up. Our visitors can take advantage of the many local restaurants, or the Guilford Food Center, and get a great meal to go. The third week features Guilford Art Centers Handcrafts Exposition. This is not your typical arts and crafts fair though. For over 50 years, hundreds of artisans from around the country descend on the Town Green to exhibit. This show is one of the premier events on “the circuit’.
August is when Bishop’s Orchards hosts the Shoreline Wine Festival. This festival features some of Connecticut’s finest Vineyards and Wineries. They offer both “traditional” wine, and fruit wines. Bishop’s in particular has received a lot of recognition for their fruit wines. Other highlights in August include Shakespeare on the Green, and the St. George’s Carnival. Throughout the summer, the town offers concerts on the Green every Sunday, and many other festivals and fairs. Check out the Chamber website for a complete list of events.
September is Fair month! The Guilford Fair is one of the oldest in the State, and also one of the largest. The Following week is the Durham Fair, which is the largest in the State, and Connecticut’s Unofficial State Fair. September and October are also two of the busiest months of the year throughout the State. In addition to the fairs, you also have numerous Harvest Festivals, Arts & Crafts shows, Halloween events (lets face facts, Halloween is a very New England holiday) and of course leaf peeping.
